Introducing the new power tool for your skin care kit: Medik8 Rechargeable Vitamin C Serum

Beauty bloggers read up on ‘groundbreaking’ beauty products pretty much every day, but it’s not every day we find something that is actually new and innovative. However, today, at Cosmetic News Expo, I was genuinely thrilled to discover CE-Thione – Medik8’s new water-based, oil-free, potent rechargeable 15% vitamin C serum.

And when I say rechargeable, I mean rechargeable. The way CE-Thione is formulated ensures that every drop of vitamin c provides equal freshness and impact, which is truly groundbreaking given that existing vitamin C products degrade pretty quickly if they haven’t been used in a certain period of time.

The main benefits of using CE-Thione include daily antioxidant protection through the use of three powerful antioxidants (vitamin C, vitamin E & L-Glutathione) and prevention of skin ageing. However, the biggest plus point for me in a practical sense is that, unlike other products of this nature that leave the skin sticky post application, Medik8’s formula glides on like a hydrator, which I can verify as I tested it today and was really pleased! For me, this aspect of the product really distinguished Medik8’s topical vitamin C from any other.

I will definitely be buying this product, but will you? Have a look online at the product information here and let me know your thoughts below! xxx

Here’s the products YOU brought into my life
February 15, 2013, 10:50 pm

I’ve always loved reading a good glossy mag to find out what’s hot in the big wide beauty world, but everyone knows the quickest route to the crème de la crème of cosmetics is via the blogosphere.

Thanks to you lovely beauty bloggers, I have seen so many amazing products lately for Spring/Summer 2013. So, to acknowledge these great finds (and fab bloggers!), I have dedicated today’s post to the products YOU introduced me to in your blog posts. As this post could potentially go on forever, I have given myself the tremendously tricky task of picking just five must-have beauty essentials. Enjoy!

ONE
What’s the product? Daniel Sandler Dual Action Make-Up Remover
Who featured it? Sheenie Shaikh, Just Nice Things

xxxxx

For years, I used face wipes to remove my make-up, but a few months ago I decided that enough was enough – I was spending so much money too often on a product that did nothing spectacular for my skin. So I decided to move on to a thinner liquid make-up remover and buy cotton wool pads to go along with it, and it has been so much better for my skin. That’s why I am excited about this perfect potential purchase – a dual make-up remover from the highly-acclaimed Daniel Sandler. What’s not to love?

The 120ml bottle costs £15.

Read Sheenie’s full product review here.

TWO
What’s the product? Bumble and Bumble Deep Conditioner
Who featured it? Adrienne, The Sunday Girl

xxxx

I’m always sceptical when it comes to deep conditioners – in the past I have been a sucker for marketing hype and haven’t seen a return on the majority of my hair care investments. However, because Adrienne has thick hair like me, I really trust that this product could be one to beat.

Plus, I have heard amazing things about Bumble and Bumble, but am ashamed to admit I have never tried anything! So I think you’ll find that’s at least two good reasons why I need this product in my life.

The full-size bottle (150ml) costs £21.50, but there’s a smaller version (50ml) for £9.50.

Read The Sunday Girl’s full review here.

THREE
What’s the product? KIKO Glamorous Eye Pencil
Who featured it? Grace, All that Slap

xxxxx

Not only do I love a high-quality, pigmented eye pencil, but also I adore midnight blue. That’s why I completely fell in love with Kiko Cosmetics’ Glamorous Eye Pencils when I saw them on Grace’s blog last week. Retailing at only £4.90 each, these pencils are a really beautiful bargain.

Read Grace’s full review here.

FOUR
What’s the product? Maybelline Baby Lips
Who featured it? Jane, British Beauty Blogger

xxxx

Jane is always at the top of her game when it comes to what’s new and worth buying. One of the most exciting products I have seen on her blog lately is Maybelline Baby Lips. Originally from the US, Baby Lips is now going to be launched in the UK (much to many beauty bloggers’ delight). It’s available in several shades, has a sun protection factor of 20, and is said to provide 8 hours of moisture and rejuvenation.

See where I discovered this range here on Jane’s blog.

FIVE
What’s the product? Bobbi Brown Brightening Finishing Powder
Who featured it? Amelia Liana, Liana Beauty

xxxxx

If I had to pick one product that screams Spring/Summer, it would be this uber pretty Bobbi Brown brightening powder. Formulated with mulberry, grape and brightening plant extracts, the powder illuminates the skin while also maintaining a natural effect.

At £40, it is quite expensive, but the fact that it’s so special kind of justifies the cost.

You can check out Amelia’s full post here.

Need vs Want: Japonesque’s Safari Chic Brush Set
February 14, 2013, 9:54 am

xxxx

Go on – feast your eyes on this fabulous brush set. I want to, you want to, we all want to! In fact, I don’t think there’s a single b-blogger who wouldn’t want to know more about this tres unique safari-themed brush set from Japonesque. It’s so different to the usual block colour brushes we are used to, and it really does intrigue me.

Having said that, is the aesthetic of a product more important than how it works and its quality? Is it a case of don’t judge a brush book by its cover?

In the name of rare rational beauty shopping (because the two can go together?!), I teamed up with one of my favourite b-bloggers Callie Rose from cllrs.blogspot.co.uk to answer the all important question: do I need or want this product?

Here’s what Callie had to say about the Japonesque Safari Chic Brush set:
This gorgeous little set contains 3 different brushes to help you complete your desired look. Contains: Safari Chis Powder Brush for blending blusher and bronzing powder, Safari Chic Shadow Brush for shading and diffusing shadow over the eyelid and Safari Chic Crease Brush for creating depth and drama by smudging pigment along the socket line.

Does Callie want or need this product?
NEED: I need some new eyeshadow brushes as the one that I’m currently using is the brush that came with my Naked 2 palette. It does the job okay, but I’ve had it that long that it is falling apart. I usually put shadow into the crease of my eye to add that extra effect. I like having big dramatic eyes, so the crease brush would be perfect.

WANT: I suppose they could wait as I already have a powder brush, so don’t need the full set – but just look at them! They’re so pretty! And the price is within my budget (well, maybe after Lent as I’m on a spending ban). Not only are the brushes vegan-friendly and made with the highest quality synthetic material, they also come in a a micro-fibre travel case so they’re always on hand. If it wasn’t lent, I’d buy them now.

VERDICT: Need

Do I want or need this product?
NEED: It doesn’t take a beauty genius to see how incredible these brushes look. And as I am in an eye make-up phase lately, the safari brush set would make a great addition to my ever-growing palette and mono shadow collection. Another thing is that my biggest problem with eye looks is creases – those damn things always get in the way of a good look! So I need a good crease brush in my life. I also really love that all three brushes have been designed with contouring in mind. Overall, I think it’s priced well for a high-quality, vegan-friendly set.

WANT: If I’m really honest, I do have a great powder and eyeshadow brush already, so could my money be better spent elsewhere? For £28 I could indulge in several items and mix and match lips, eyes and cheeks. But it’s better to spend money on quality beauty essentials than splurge it on 15 purple eyeshadows when you only need 5 (OK maybe 10…). My biggest problem with spending money on beauty is that I don’t make enough long-term investments, so this a good place to start!

VERDICT: Need

So, what’s the overall verdict?
We both need this ultra unique brush set.

Why?
Natasha says:
Let’s face it – we didn’t need much convincing! All we had to do is look at it to know how special it is. The truth is there is nothing else like it, and for that reason we just have to have it!
Callie says: Personally, I think these babies are worth buying. They’ll be going onto my wishlist until the end of Lent when I shall purchase them. What’s not to love about them? They are vegan-friendly, travel-friendly, and eye-friendly (as in they look amazing with their safari print). Well worth the £28!

What do you think? Would you have made the same decision?

P.S If you would like to write a need vs want post with me, tweet me @shotofbeauty or send me an email at shotofbeauty@hotmail.co.uk. Why not tweet Callie at @catdicko also and have a look at her blog?

Once Upon A Bathtime: Bomb Cosmetics’ First Love Bath Mallow
February 13, 2013, 12:51 pm
Filed under: Bath and body | Tags: , ,

There’s no doubt about it – it is FREEZING! All I can think about to keep me warm is a relaxing hot soak in the tub, so there was no better time than monday night to try out Bomb Cosmetics’ First Love Bath Mallow – one of the gorgeous bath and body goodies from my recent Bomb Cosmetics Haul (see post here).

xxxx

Ready to be let loose!

xxxx

I kind of didn’t want to touch it in case I broke it!

This sweet, soft bath mallow is the cutest thing in the world. Made in the design of a cupcake, it looks good enough to eat and feels as soft as buttercream. By looking at it and feeling its texture, I got the feeling it would be a rich, slow-melting product, which is exactly what it has been described as. It gets 10/10 in terms of product aesthetics!

xxx

Just before the big bath drop…

The product packaging advises you to run a warm bath and drop this in while the tub is filling up, so I did exactly that and took a quick pic before the big drop (above).

xxx

Within seconds of the drop…

xxx

Half way through the melting process…

Admittedly, at first, I was a bit disappointed – I expected to see a bath full of candy pink and sky blue waves, but it was white instead. Unfortunately, the visual effect of the mallow hitting the water was not quite what I was expecting, but I think this sort of product is more about the moisturising effects it has on the skin, and it looked pretty dreamy to me. Maybe the problem is that I am so used to ‘ballistics’ and so was looking for a bigger bang, if you see what I mean?

Although I was confused initially, once I actually got into the bath it was so creamy and gorgeous. It slowly melted away for a long time, which I liked, and its scent was subtle and relaxing.

So, overall, for a bath product of this size, I was impressed with the results and would like to try the bath mallows again. It wouldn’t be a ‘must have’ repurchase, but I think it’s great for a special treat after a long, cold day with dehydrated skin!

Would you try this product? What’s your favourite bath treat? xxx

Lipstick Lust List

Valentine’s day is around the corner, which means one thing – it’s time to pucker up and perfect that pout. So, in the name of love and beauty inspiration, here’s five lipsticks I am lusting over at the moment…

1/Illamasqua I’mperfection Lipstick in Immodest (£16)

xxx

Powerful and pigmented

The closest I’mperfection can get to perfection – this highly-pigmented matte-effect lipstick from Illamasqua is a real steal. It’s vivid, long-lasting and the perfect shade for Spring/Summer 2013.

2/Topshop Lips Velvet in Tease (£8)

xxx

Affordable & cute

This sweet lipstick from Topshop would be perfect for a daytime Valentine’s date. I love these lipsticks – they aren’t too expensive and every shade is so pretty. It is moisturising and nourishing and has a matte finish. You could use this all year round for work and play and gloss it up with a clear lip glass for some extra zing.

3/Aerin Lipstick in Tulip (£24)

xxx

Pretty in pink

Based on spring flowers, this signature lipstick from Aerin not only looks beautiful, but also has a subtle rose scent, making each application a sensory experience. The product epitomises Spring and is likely to be a big hit this season. I cannot tell you how much I want this one!

4/Lancôme Baume In Love Lipbalm in Sugar Rose (£20)

xxx

Moisturising candy pink

I’ve had my eye on this translucent candy pink balm ever since it launched earlier this year. It has a comforting formula and is made with shea butter to moisturise the lips all year round.

5/Burberry Beauty Lip Velvet in Military Red (£22.50)

xxx

Sultry red

This lipstick is stunning. From the packaging to the design of the lipstick itself (and the amazing sultry red colour), it really does tick all boxes. It’s a classic red lipstick inspired by ‘opulent English fabrics’ and is made to moisturise, hydrate and protect.

What lip colour will you be wearing this valentine’s day? xxx

February Glossybox: Valentine’s Day Edition

Top view of the February Glossybox

I was a happy lady this morning, as the first thing I saw when I came downstairs was my brand new shiny Glossybox! This month’s ‘theme’ is valentine’s day, as you can tell by the pretty pink design and the product information leaflet below saying ‘will you be ours?’. And judging by what’s in the box this month, I will be theirs forever!

xxx

Glossybox editorial

The idea behind this month’s box is that, whatever you are doing and whoever you are with, you will be head over heels in love with this selection of products.

So let’s look inside the box…

xxx

Inside the Glossybox

xxx

Amazing product selection in the box

Overall, I am really pleased with the production selection in this edition. Although it has lots of pretty and pink bits, it also has a lovely creamy eyeshadow duo and a coffee-shade lipstick, so I feel Glossybox has managed to cater to everyone.

Inside my box is an Anatomicals Your Nose Smells Rose Body Cleanser (150ml), a Limited Edition Docteur Renaud Raspberry Soft Cream (30ml), a Helen E Cosmetics Moisturising Lipstick in Cafe au Lait, a Model Co Eyeshadow Duo in Bronzed Goddess and a Micabella Cosmetics Mineral Blush Powder in Terra Cotta.

I love the classic candy pink and canary yellow combination on Anatomicals’ packaging. Above you can see the product from the front, its ingredients (paraben-free formula = thumbs up) and the ever-amusing product description. I love a brand with personality!

xxxx

The gel inside the bottle

And here is the cleanser from inside the bottle. The first thing I thought was that it smelled like turkish delight, which I like. It’s quite a thick pink formula and so I imagine it would spread well in the shower.

It costs £5 for 300ml.

2/Docteur Renaud Raspberry Soft Cream

xxxx

Docteur Renaud Limited Edition Raspberry Soft Cream

xxx

What’s inside the box

I haven’t tried anything from this brand before and I do love a limited edition product. Also, as I have mentioned before, I love the smell and taste of raspberry, and this soft cream includes four raspberry extracts.

xxxx

Product info and ingredients on the back of the box

xxxx

Product info on the dispenser

Docteur Renaud’s soft cream is designed to hydrate, moisturise and comfort the skin in the winter months. It is made with patented phyto-endorphins which boost cell activity and is suitable for all skin types.

xxxx

On the hand

xxx

Rubbed into the hand

In terms of consistency, the cream is thick and white. It smells lovely, but I think it is a bit too heavy duty for my skin. It takes quite a while to rub it in properly, and as you can see above you have to buff it into the skin a bit to avoid a white shimmery effect.

This one costs £25 for 50ml.

3/Helen E Cosmetics Moisturising Lipstick in Cafe au Lait

xxxx

Helen E Cosmetics Cafe au Lait Lipstick

xxx

Cafe au Lait label

I like the simplistic silvery packaging, but unfortunately the shade isn’t really for me. I’m not generally a fan of brown lipsticks as I prefer brighter colours like red and pink, but I do rate Glossybox for including something different.

xxx

First look

xxx

Swatched

The colour is quite golden and brown and I think you need to build it a fair bit to get a solid colour. It costs £8 for 3.5g.

4/Model Co Eyeshadow Duo in Bronzed Goddess

xxx

Model Co Eyeshadow Duo

xxx

Creamy gold and brown duo

This is more like it; although I don’t do golden brown for my lips, I definitely do for my eyes, and this duo is really pretty for day and night looks. The shadows are creamy too, which I like, although it might mean you have to manage any creases early on.

xxx

Swatched

The gold is really nice and the brown would be great to add in for a night look. I reckon you could mix and match and use the gold to highlight the inner corners of the eyes.

The duo costs £18 for 3 x 2.35g.

5/Micabella Cosmetics Mineral Blush Powder (Terra Cotta)

xxxx

MICA Bella Cosmetics Mineral Blush

xxxx

In Terra Cotta

The final beauty item in the box is a pretty pink mineral blush powder from Micabella Cosmetics. I have never heard of this brand, but I do prefer powder blushes and would like to try a mineral one. You can add a darker colour to the cheeks too to contour the cheekbones. Another day and night staple – it’s perfect for v day.

The full size blush costs £34.95 for 9g.

And last but not least is this super sweet candy heart lolly as a gift from Glossybox – how sweet!

xxxx

How cute is this lolly!

Happy valentine’s day beauty bloggers! xxx

Mini Superdrug Hair Haul

Garnier Olia & Herbal Essences

I’ve got that friday feeling, and there’s nothing like a quick beauty shop after work to end the week nicely. As my hair is in need of a bit of TLC at the moment (no thanks to the freezing cold weather!), I swung by Superdrug and grabbed myself two of my beauty essentials – Herbal Essences’ Tousle Me Softly Soft Waves Intensive Mask (was £3.99, now £1.85 for 200ml) and Garnier Olia Hair Dye in Iced Chocolate 4.15 (was £6.99, now £5.99). If I am honest, I nearly went for the Deep Red shade, but my previous experiences of dying my hair red reminded me not to (red roots anyone?! I think not).

Top view

xxxx

Front view

I usually go for the Herbal Essences Beautiful Ends Intensive Mask, which is amazing, but as I have naturally wavy hair I thought I would give this one a go. I have tried the Tousle Me Softly range before, so it’s not really a risky purchase.

xxx

Product information and ingredients

You can lather this on from root to tip. It is advised to leave it on for 5 minutes, but nobody stands around in the shower for that long these days. These conditioners always work their magic for me, so if you are in a rush then it will work just fine.

See the ingredients above too.

xxx

Smells amazing!

When I lifted the lid, I could instantly smell the product and it’s lovely. It has that classic Herbal Essences fruity fragrance and in terms of consistency it is a fairly thick and creamy formula. This is one of the things I love most about this product as I have thick hair and find it hard to get hold of a conditioner that absorbs well.

My second purchase was this amazing permanent hair colour from Garnier’s Olia range. For those of you who haven’t heard of Olia hair dyes, they are fab at-home colours made with 60% oils and no ammonia. I chose Iced Chocolate 4.15 simply because it is the closest to my hair colour.

As you can see, the main features of Olia hair colours are colour intensity, grey coverage, quality improvement and scalp comfort.

xxx

Looks good enough to eat!

xxx

From inside the box

Inside the box is the standard tools and formulations needed for at-home hair colouring. There’s the instructions for use, a pair of black gloves for protection, a developer cream, a colourant cream, the Olia jar and applicator, and a lovely multi-application conditioner.

Having used this dye before,  I would really recommend it. The product doesn’t dry out the hair as much as other products, which is a big plus for me.

What hair products have you bought lately?

A Beauty Expert’s Guide To Healthy Skin: Five Minutes With Esther Fieldgrass
February 7, 2013, 4:44 pm

Esther Fieldgrass - Medium Res

Within minutes of meeting beauty expert and EF Medispa Owner Esther Fieldgrass, she knew what I had to do to transform my skin. And with 40 years of experience as an industry insider, I should think so too!

It all started at a chic restaurant in St John’s Wood, where Skinceuticals was holding its launch event for the Balancing Micropeel. With a glass of orange juice in one hand and a notebook in the other, I spoke with Esther about her favourite treatments and what she loved most about the beauty industry. But then I was faced with the big, dreaded question: ‘What do you with your skin?’ If she had asked me 6-8 months ago, she would have looked at me in horror; however, luckily, I no longer use face wipes (sorry Esther!) and have been converted to the wonderful science-based skin care of Skinceuticals. I replied: ‘I have quite oily skin, and I cleanse, tone and moisturise with the Retexturising Activator.’ It was at that point that I knew there was something else on her mind – looking after my inner wellbeing (diet, hydration and stress management) should be a higher priority than it is right now. And that is the real key to having and maintaining healthy, glowing skin.

I just had to share Esther’s advice with you as I found it so interesting and helpful, and I hadn’t thought about the points she made in any great depth in the past. If you too have oily skin, I would love to know what you think of the top tips below and whether you would like to make any changes for not only your skin, but also your general health.

Top Tip 1. Go On An Alkaline Diet
‘You need to go on an alkaline diet’ were the first words of wisdom I heard from Esther, which was quite amusing at the time considering we were standing next to a table full of acidic foods and a glass full of fresh orange juice. To clear up any blemishes or oiliness, Esther told me it is best to avoid drinking coffee (weak tea, if desperate) and eating too many dairy-based products, and start drinking a lot more water to keep my skin hydrated. The acidic content of my food is definitely not something I had thought of before talking to Esther – I do drink a lot of tea during the day and do like cheese quite a lot, but I never considered how the acidic content of what I eat and drink could affect the health and appearance of my skin.

Top Tip 2. Don’t Shy Away From Oil-Based Skin Care
One thing I was dying to speak to Esther about was skin hydration and what products I should use to keep my skin under control. I told her how apprehensive I was when it came to facial oils and oil-based skin care, as I was worried it was going to make my skin worse and increase the likelihood and severity of my breakouts. I was right to be concerned; according to Esther, your skin needs to be constantly hydrated, otherwise more oil will be produced, making the condition of the skin a lot worse. She also said that the use of some toners can strip the skin of its oils, making the skin feel dry and therefore producing even more oil, exacerbating the problem. So, the takeaway message here was to keep the skin very cleansed and clean, and use hydrating serums as opposed to moisturisers and oily creams. SkinCeuticals do a B5 serum for rehydrating that she particularly recommends, as well as the Retexturising Activator which is great for oily skin. But, most importantly, water intake needs to be steady and often.

Top Tip 3: Don’t Overdo It With Topical Vitamin C
Vitamin C as a topical formulation is one of Esther’s favourite skin care products. When looking at my skin, she advised me to just dab it on once a day (every morning) and not to use too much on every application, as the skin builds up a reservoir of vitamin c and so does not need to be topped up as much as you would think. I never knew this before and found it so interesting, especially as so many skin care products include vitamin c as a staple ingredient these days.

Top Tip 4: It’s All About Maintenance
To achieve and maintain healthy skin, one treatment will never do the trick. Just as life goes on, skin care goes on. So, to look after your skin well, you need to attack all bases, including eliminating bodily toxins and using high-quality skin care to cleanse and hydrate the skin. Use a broad-spectrum SPF every day, no matter what the weather is like outside. Come rain or shine, every season is sun protection season, and Esther couldn’t have stressed that point more.

Top Tip 5: Preparation Is Key
The skin is the largest organ, and so it must be treated well. Before having any chemical peels, the skin must be prepared for at least 2 weeks to take on the power of the formulation, and should also be hydrated. If the skin isn’t prepared thoroughly, the peel won’t work, will be uncomfortable and may dry out the skin. It’s not about what you do at your appointments – it’s about what you do between them that really counts. Never pay a lot of money for a treatment without knowing what state your skin should be in before it takes place. You want to see results to justify the cost.
